A Study for Cognitions and Attitudes about the Funeral Services for the Progressive Change of Funeral Service Culture in Korea


Abstract
This study ws conducted to provide fundamental data for the progressive change of the funeral service culture in Korea. A questionnaire survey for their preference, cogitions and attitudes about the current funeral services was conducted from February 1 to 20,2000 on the 322 adults(155 men and 167 women) over 20 years old in Pusan area. In the agreement of funeral modes. Cremation(53.4% was higher than burying(35.0%) and in the preference of funeral places. Besides home(53.1%) was higher than their own home(44.7%) Older group preferred burying than cremation(p<0.05) and women(p<0.01) catholics and christianx(p<0.05) the inhabitants of apartments(p<0.01) preferred besides home than their own home. And the educational level. Religion. Economic status and type of housing influenced to the cognitions and attitudes n general. Major reasons to agree with cremation were lack of space for cemetery(42.4%) and preservation of nature(32.9%) and 60% of them agreed that occupaney of the current cemetery is already significant. Many of them(73.4%) recognized the charnel house, and 82.6% of them were willing to use funeral agencies such as funeral parors but they feel discomforts with relatively high cost. Lack of devotion when using it. Majority of them(72.4%) agreed with the need for changing the current funeral system. And about half of them(45.6%) referred the leaders¢¥ initiative as an important way to guide progressive chang of the funeral practices. Concludingly, expansion of funeral facilities for cremation and considerations for the acdessibilit and convenience based on not only emotional aspects but economic aspects were matter of immediate necessities to the progressive change of funeral service culture in Korea. The leadership¢¥s initiative and continuous national publicity activities should be also strengthened.
